Dental Appointment Preparedness

Dental Cleaning

For some of us, a dental appointment comes with a bit of anxiety. To make things easier for you and for the office, get yourself prepared for your checkup. Here are seven ways to prepare for a smooth dental cleaning and exam:

1. Update Your Info

A dentist’s office runs similarly to a medical office. Records are kept, insurance is charged and notes are made on how to best treat each patient. To give you the best possible care, your dentist needs all the information. Before walking in for your dental appointment make sure you are prepared to hand over:

  • Current dental insurance
  • List of current medications
  • Relevant medical history
  • Current dental records

2. Confirmation

It is always best to confirm an appointment before arrival. Not only do you want to confirm date and time, but a few other details as well.

  1. Ensure that you are scheduled with the dentist you are most comfortable with
  2. Confirm the estimated length of the appointment
  3. Ask if it is time to update your x-rays
  4. Make sure the office is not missing any crucial information

3. Brush & Floss Like Never Before

Now is your time to make an impression. Don’t give anyone a chance to question your hygiene skills. Giving yourself a good clean before the appointment can save you time during a cleaning, and help it to be even more efficient. The exam will surely run smoothly when you show you have nothing to hide.

4. List All Irritations

Your regular dental exam is not the time to push aside even the slightest irritation. Speak up! It is always best to stop dental decay in its tracks before it becomes a serious problem. Don’t wait until it’s too late. To let your hygienist and dentist know of any sensitivities, pain or changes: write them down and bring them in!

5. Early Bird

Plan to arrive at the appointment about 15 minutes early. Not only is it a nice gesture to the business, but it helps to ensure enough time to update all necessary information. It also gives you time to settle in before you are called back.

6. Make Yourself Comfortable

Comfort is key when it comes to dentistry. Many people have anxieties, uneasiness and even fear towards dental work. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Express your concerns and feelings. Let the staff know exactly how they can help to ease your troubles. Conscious sedation is a safe and easy way to get you pleasantly through your checkup.

7. Until Next Time

Once your exam is finished, your dentist will let you know if any follow-ups are needed so that you know exactly when to schedule your next appointment. Pop in at the front desk on your way out and simply let them know when you need to be seen again. And just like that you are on your way.
