Beautiful Young Healthy Woman Eating A Salad.Of course it’s important to brush and floss regularly, but what else can we be doing to win the fight for whiter teeth?  Our smile can say a lot about our diet. Teeth discoloration occurs when bacteria builds up in your mouth. Bacteria loves sweet sugar just like the rest of us. The bacteria will ferment the sugar into an enamel-eating acid that can be the cause of countless dental care issues later. Discoloration is just one of many examples of what can happen to your oral health when bacteria is allowed to move in.

Starchy foods are similar. Your saliva will break down starchy foods into acid as well. Keeping your mouth clean and clear of bacteria is imperative to a healthy, brighter smile.

But we can only brush and floss our teeth so many times in a day.  What if you could clean your mouth with the act of eating!?  It’s true.

1. Carrots

Carrots make you chew and chewing produces saliva.  Saliva will neutralize or even out the amount of enamel-damaging acids and enzymes in your mouth. The more you chew, the more you are cleaning your mouth while you eat. Carrots are rough in texture which might scrape food residue off your teeth while you eat. End your meal with a carrot!

2. Strawberries

You wouldn’t think it, but strawberries can actually whiten your smile. There is a certain ascorbic acid in strawberries that has been shown to have a slight whitening effect. Strawberries are also packed with polyphenols, which suppress bacterial growth

3. Spinach

Spinach and lettuce are one of the best sources of magnesium with 78 mg in a half-cup serving. A magnesium deficiency can cause an unhealthy balance of phosphorous and calcium in your saliva. This unbalance can be harmful for your bright smile. Spinach will help your mouth brighten your smile for you.

4. Cheese

A healthy balance of phosphorous and calcium is what you’re shooting for. Both of these important minerals can be found in cheese.  Eating a healthy amount of cheese in your regular diet will help you, help you. Remember to brush after every meal anyway, but especially after cheese!

5. Cauliflower

The reasons for the positive impact of cauliflower for your white smile is similar to carrots. This vegetable, when eaten raw, will make you chew and that will make more saliva in your mouth. Cauliflower has a ton of healthy vitamins and minerals you need every day. One important one is glucosinolates which the American Institute of Cancer Research has shown it can help fight off cancer cells.

Improve your diet and improve your life.  “You are what you eat”.  If you take care of your mouth and eat raw vegetables to get the healthy vitamins and minerals you need, your mouth will have an easier time warding off bacteria buildup and keep your teeth white.

Having your teeth professionally cleaned will help keep bacteria and other buildup from occurring. Contact our office today to set up an appointment.
